I've since built my son a gaming PC and bought him Ark on Steam and it plays much better that way. Again using Ark as an example if I hosted a local game and invited my kid to play on the Xbox tether distance was capped. Also it seems like some gameplay options are either non-existent or much more limited. And I was able to play cross-platform with my kid if I launched the Game Pass version on PC and then invited him to play if he was on Xbox. I've had both versions and the version on Game Pass/Windows Store was far inferior to the version I have on Steam.

From personal experience it seems like the games I download from Game Pass or the Windows Store to my PC are closer to the Xbox version of the game than the Steam version. I haven't been able to find a definitive answer to this using Google so I thought I would ask here.
